Feeding Instructions

Lafeber’s Premium Daily Diet Feeding Schedule. If you have never used pellets before, please read the following information. If your bird is familiar with our pellets, you may skip the conversion instructions. Birds are shy about new foods. If your bird has eaten seed all its life, pellets can be a drastic change. PLEASE DO NOT IMMEDIATELY SWITCH SEED EATING BIRDS TO PELLETS. Converting birds to pellets: Often, birds seem to need a short period of introduction, then convert to Lafeber’s Premium Daily Diet from seeds quite rapidly. Here are some methods to help in conversion. 1. Mixing with diet – this involves mixing the pellets with your bird’s current food. Start by making pellets about 10% of the food, then gradually increase the amount of pellets each day until pellets account for 80% of the diet. This method is often done over a period of two to four weeks, depending on your bird. 2. Avi-Cakes – Perhaps the best method is to use Lafeber’s Avi-Cakes, a pellet/seed mixture bound together with a natural coating. Birds are attracted to the seeds and soon end up eating the pellets. A perfect conversion food! 3. Fill a dish with pellets and leave it all day, while giving your bird seed for short periods during the day. Decrease the amount of bird seed gradually until pellets account for 80% of your birds diet, with 20% being fresh fruits, vegetables and grains. We recommend dark orange and green veggies, as these are the most nutritious. Birds, just like people, love a well-rounded diet with lots of variety.
